The 3 Things That I Learned From Being Interviewed

Two weeks ago my childhood home’s newspaper gave me the opportunity to be interviewed, It was an awkward strange but comfortable feeling. This is the paper that I grew up reading. That is, on the rare occasion that I read anything. It always had the latest sports information and some interesting articles on familiar faces.
In August of 1985 I was pictured with my 4-H project of tomatoes from my family’s farm at the Wood County Fair. Times have changed and so have I, but the Sentinel-Tribune remains constant.
They were excited to run the article about me and the release of my first book, Sometimes It DOES Take a Brain Surgeon. Without question I learned a lot from this experience. After the interview, I spent the night at my mom’s house. We got up the next morning and had breakfast with a small subset of my 80+ member family.
Here’s what I learned from the experience.
- It doesn’t matter how old you get, you’re still your mom’s baby.
- People are genuine when you are, usually.
- Understanding your purpose aids in clear and concise discussions.
This week reminded me of a quote that I recently heard from US Senator Cory Booker when speaking about his father. Cory was a Division I athletics prospect and his father used to say, “don’t strut around this house like you just hit a triple. Remember that you were born on third base.” This is something that we all need to remember. It’s important to recall how we got here.
I have provided you a link to the article here.
