When It’s Time, You’ll Know It
A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to share a bus ride with Howard Putnam, the former CEO of Southwest Airlines. During the ride, it was pretty quiet. We were both enjoying the Dallas skyline and the beautiful traffic [sarcasm] they have there. Earlier in the day, Howard had led a session and dropped many gems of wisdom on a group of 70-80 people.
These people were mostly speakers gathered for the National Speakers Association, Influence 2018. This is an annual convention of likeminded thought leaders that share something in common. That is grow their speaking topics, business and delivery in such a way to positively “influence” the world that we live in.
In short, it’s 1,500 being spoken to about how to speak.
After a short 22 minute ride, we had gone from Dallas Cowboy AT&T Stadium to the Hilton Anatole Hotel. During those minutes we spoke more to the bus driver, Donald, then we did to each other.
As we walked into the lobby I shook his hand and thanked him. I told him how proud my dad would be that I had actually met you. He had heard a little of my story earlier in the day and he firmly shook my hand and looked me in the eye and said, “When it’s time, you’ll know it.”
And he walked away. I may never see him again, but I’ll keep those words with me for ever.
“When it’s time. You’ll know it.”
Those words make me anxious and wondering when it’ll be time.
Until then and after, I’ll do my best to add value to you.
